The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant of all."

Testimonial - Eddie Surmon - 6/9/2011
I am a member of the Mtunzini Methodist Society, and have been for the past five (5) years. I am the local preacher for Mtunzini and surrounds, although I also preach in Richards Bay.

I was a pilgrim on Walk 58, at AE, in Pietermaritzburg. That was in September 2003. I had just come through a very tough period in my marriage and it was also putting a strain on my ministry. A friend sponsored me to Emmaus and in the space of 72 hours, the Lord lifted my burden and I left it at the foot of the cross during Dying moments. I have never been the same and I thank the Lord for that weekend and the many friends I have since made through Emmaus.

I have since worked on Team as a Table Leader, on two occasions and I intend to work on the next walk in April / May 2012. I started a business in 2007, which has taken up a lot of my time. I am now in a position where I can take a few days leave and business will go on. I also believe God will take care of my business, while I take care of His. I sponsored two friends to attend Emmaus during 2009. Dan Germishuyze, one of the two, and I will make application for team in 2012. We both feel that we need to draw closer to God and to the Emmaus community.

We have a very special Methodist Society in Mtunzini. We are effectively a family and it is the least politicised congregation I have ever been part of. It’s all about the Lord. As a result we have been referred to as the “gemeenskapskerk or community church” because our doors are open to everyone and we live for our community. Mtunzini is a very affluent little town, and home to a number of retired businessmen from big business and also the home of a large group of intellectuals, who are mostly involved in the nearby University of Zululand. It is a very difficult mission field, because most people are well to do and not in desperate need, hence there are many who have no relationship with the Lord. But our little church continues to grow and we are proud to have people in our church who have played a major role in South Africa.

What is significant is that our entire leadership are Emmaus Community Members;
Pastoral Assistants Eckhardt and Bev Bodenstein – Have been with KZN Emmaus for many years.
Local Preacher – Eddie Surmon
Society Steward – John Stevenson – Was a pilgrim in Gauteng
Property Manager – Peter Cleary (Also his wife Cathy)
Treasurer – Clary Dicks
Members Representative – Megan Groom.

I have been on the leadership of several churches in my life and I have never before been on a team where there is absolute unity and where one can experience God at work. Our leadership team are like-minded and each and everyone has a passion for what he or she is doing, for the work of the Lord and for every member of our church. Yes, this may also be the case at other churches, but it is the level of commitment and the spirit in which things are done that is different. If I can attribute it to anything other than God Himself, then I give the Walk to Emmaus the credit. I believe each and everyone of us experienced the same 72 hour pilgrimage, that brought us face to face with Jesus and with the genuine love that only His children can radiate. I believe Emmaus changed our hearts and our lives and placed in our hearts the need to continue sharing the love of Jesus Christ with all those around us. How can one participate in something so special, so divine, and not be changed.

To God be the Glory.
